DTF Pressing Instructions

The right settings. A clean peel. A confident finish.
Choose your transfer below for the settings and steps to use at your heat press.

What are you pressing?

Premium DTF · Cotton

Final press5 sec

Use medium, even pressure. Peel hot or allow to cool, then cover the exposed design and press again for 5 seconds.

Settings are for DTF Experts transfers applied with a heat press. Test one piece on the exact garment before a production run. Follow the garment’s heat limitations.

Four steps to your finished print

1. Position

Lay the garment flat. Place the design against the fabric with the carrier film facing up. Keep seams, zippers and thick edges out of the pressing area.

2. Press

Press for 10 seconds at 285–300°F with medium, even pressure.

Check platen temperature and pressure before starting your run.

3. Peel

Premium DTF can be peeled hot or cold. Peel steadily while keeping the garment flat.

If the design lifts, stop peeling and lay the film back down.

4. Finish

After removing the film, cover the exposed design with a suitable heat-press cover sheet and press again for 5 seconds at the selected temperature.

Inspect the edges before moving into production.

Before your first piece

Use a heat press that can deliver consistent temperature and even pressure. Pressure labels vary between machines; check your press manual and test the actual garment.

For blends, coated fabrics or an unfamiliar garment, confirm the fabric composition and test before choosing production settings. Contact us if you need help.

Strong Bond & coated fabrics

Strong Bond is intended for selected challenging fabrics, including some water-resistant garments. Coatings vary: test adhesion, appearance and wash performance on the exact garment before production.

Strong Bond and Glitter are cold peel: let the transfer cool completely before removing the carrier.

Something not pressing right?

The design lifts when I peel

Stop and lay the carrier back down. Confirm you selected the correct transfer and peel method. Strong Bond and Glitter must cool completely. Check actual platen temperature and even pressure before testing again. Do not repeatedly increase heat on a heat-sensitive garment; contact us if the problem continues.

The edges aren’t adhering evenly

Check for seams, pockets or zippers preventing flat contact, and verify pressure reaches the entire design. Test on a flat area and confirm the platen heats evenly. Follow the transfer’s full press and finish sequence.

I’m getting press marks or scorching—especially on polyester

First, identify the mark. A light outline from the edge of the platen can be a pressure impression. A shiny, glazed, melted or discolored area may be permanent heat damage. Stop production, let the garment cool and inspect it before adding more heat.

Try a lower temperature on a test piece. For Premium DTF on heat-sensitive polyester, you can trial 265°F (about 129°C) instead of the usual 275°F. This is a troubleshooting trial, not a replacement setting for every fabric or transfer. Check adhesion across the entire design and around the edges after cooling, then wash-test the sample before running the order. A clean peel alone does not prove a durable bond. If adhesion is poor, contact us before proceeding. Do not automatically apply 265°F to Strong Bond or Glitter.

For a light press outline: test gentle edge feathering. On a spare garment first, you may try lightly feathering the outline with a small adjustable iron or a Cricut EasyPress Mini, using a clean, thin protective pressing cloth, very light pressure and continuous movement. Work around the impression; do not rub directly over the exposed transfer or hold the iron in one spot. Check the garment’s care label and stop if shine or discoloration increases. This is an experimental finishing technique, not a verified repair for scorching.

Check which Cricut Mini you have. The adjustable EasyPress Mini’s Low setting is approximately 285°F (140°C), so it is not a 265°F iron and may still be too hot for your garment. The Mini LT has a single, hotter setting and is not suitable for this low-temperature trial.

For shops with a tunnel/conveyor dryer: treat a whole-garment pass as an experimental option for light impressions only, not a guaranteed removal method. Test a spare shirt first using a dryer profile confirmed suitable for that garment and transfer. Monitor actual garment temperature and dwell time; there is no universal temperature or belt speed for this purpose. Let the shirt cool, inspect the fabric and print, and check adhesion and wash performance. Extra heat can worsen damage or cause dye migration. Do not use this method to try to reverse melted fibers or true scorching.

Prevent the next mark. Verify platen temperature, avoid excessive pressure, keep seams outside the pressing area and consider a smaller platen or suitable pad to isolate the design. Contact our production team with the garment SKU, transfer type, settings and photos if you are unsure.

The design peels after washing

Confirm the transfer type, first-press settings, peel method and 5-second finishing press. Check for uneven pressure or a garment coating that affects adhesion. Send us the garment SKU, order number, press settings and clear photos so we can help diagnose it.

Can I use an iron or handheld press?

This guide is written for a heat press. Household irons and handheld presses can produce uneven pressure and temperature. We recommend a heat press for repeatable production results; contact us before applying these settings with another tool.

Wash & care

Follow the garment’s care label. For gentle care of the print, wash inside out in cold water and tumble dry low or hang dry. Avoid bleach and ironing directly over the design.

Ask people who press every day.

We use our transfers in our own production. Send your order number, garment brand/SKU, transfer type, temperature, time, pressure and a photo.

Quick-reference press chart

DTF Experts · Heat press settings · Test the exact garment before production.

Transfer / fabric Temperature First press Pressure Peel Finish
Premium · cotton 285–300°F / 141–149°C 10 sec Medium Hot or cold 5 sec
Premium · polyester 275°F / 135°C 10 sec Medium Hot or cold 5 sec
Strong Bond 290°F / 143°C 15 sec Medium–firm Cold 5 sec
Glitter 295°F / 146°C 10 sec Medium–high Cold 5 sec

Cold peel means fully cool. After peeling, cover the design and finish for 5 seconds at the same temperature. Coated fabrics require testing. For blends or unlisted fabrics, confirm settings with our team.

Care: wash inside out in cold water; dry low or hang dry. Follow the garment label. Avoid bleach and direct ironing on the print.
